Dozens more betting shops set to close as Nottingham moves into Tier 3
Dozens more betting shops are set to close after it was confirmed Nottingham and parts of Nottinghamshire will move into the top tier of Covid restrictions.
The announcement was made by local authority leaders and will come into force at one minute past midnight on Thursday, affecting hundreds of betting shop employees.
Around 1,200 betting shops in Britain have already been forced to close in areas which have had the highest level of rules imposed on them, with another 366 shut in Wales for 17 days under its firebreak restrictions.
The new restrictions will affect residents living in the city of Nottingham, along with Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe council areas, and are due to expire after 28 days.
Council leaders said the change was needed to "achieve a sustained reduction in infection rates" and help "protect our vulnerable residents, the NHS and social care services".
It becomes the sixth region in England to enter Tier 3 restrictions following Liverpool, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, South Yorkshire and Warrington, where the new restrictions will be imposed from Tuesday.
Under the new harshest restrictions, all pubs and bars will also be forced to close – unless they are serving substantial meals – and travel in and out of the areas is discouraged apart from for work, education or caring responsibilities.
Adult gaming centres, casinos and soft play centres must also shut.
Residents are banned from socialising with anybody they do not live with indoors, in a private garden or at most outdoor hospitality venues.
