Confirmed runners and riders for the 2022 Irish Derby - plus an early tip

Aidan O'Brien will rely on Oaks winner Tuesday in his bid to land a 15th Irish Derby (3.45) on Saturday, when she will take on seven rivals in the Curragh Classic.

O'Brien supplemented the filly this week after reporting the daughter of Galileo to have come out of her Epsom triumph very well, and will let her make her first start against colts in the Group 1 contest.

Tuesday will seek to become the first filly in 28 years to win the Irish Derby, with only two fillies attempting the feat since the turn of the century.

She will be the sole representative from the Ballydoyle yard, with O'Brien electing to not declare Stone Age, Changingoftheguard, Temple Of Artemis or Anchorage for Saturday's contest.

Tuesday, who will be partnered by regular rider Ryan Moore, was promoted to clear favouritism following declarations, having been previously tied at the head of the market with Westover.

The Juddmonte runner was also declared for Saturday and will be ridden for the first time by Colin Keane.

Westover will seek to replicate the campaign of Hurricane Lane last term, who finished third in the Cazoo Derby before striking at the Curragh.

Lionel is the only other British challenger in the field, with Jamie Spencer booked for the ride on the David Menuisier-trained colt.

Hannibal Barca will be partnered once more by Shane Crosse, who steered the son of Zoffany to success in the Gallinule Stakes on his first start for Joseph O'Brien.

Ballysax winner Piz Badile will aim to get back on track after a disappointing Derby run for Donnacha O'Brien, while the Paddy Twomey-trained French Claim and Andy Oliver-trained Glory Daze complete the field.

3 Lionel

Westover finished strongly in the Derby at Epsom, for all he lacked the pace of the winner, but he looks a colt with plenty scope for improvement and is taken to best the Oaks winner Tuesday, who does look a formidable rival and can put it up to the Juddmonte homebred. It is striking how well regarded Lionel seems to be and, from a family laden with stamina, he will likely be well suited to this contest.

Topweight trial ahead for Trueshan in Northumberland Plate

Trueshan will take on 19 rivals as he bids to defy top weight and land the JenningsBet Northumberland Plate Handicap (3.30) on Saturday.

The dual Group 1 winner faces a mammoth task in the Newcastle feature by giving away 19lb to his rivals in his first start since April.

The Alan King-trained runner was originally slated to run in last week's Gold Cup at Royal Ascot but was forced to miss the Group 1 contest due to fast ground.

King also entered him in last Saturday's Queen Alexandra Stakes, the final race of the royal meeting, in the hope that rain would arrive but was again forced to withdraw his runner and revert to the Northumberland Plate.

Trueshan finished sixth in the Newcastle 2m½f test last year carrying a weight of 9st 13lb – 9lb less than his assigned weight this year.

While his 2021 bid was aided by the 5lb claim of Rhys Clutterbuck, Trueshan will be partnered by regular jockey Hollie Doyle, fresh from her first Classic success in France on Sunday.

King is also set to saddle 2019 winner Who Dares Wins, who will be partnered by Saffie Osborne.

Trueshan is best-priced at 8-1 with bookmakers to land the Northumberland Plate, while the Hugo Palmer-trained Rajinsky heads the market at 5-1.

The six-year-old was third in his latest start in the Chester Cup and retains the partnership of apprentice Harry Davies, who described the ride as a "massive deal" for his career when speaking to the Racing Post on Tuesday.

Ben Robinson, who won the race last year on Nicholas T, will ride course-specialist Onesmoothoperator for trainer Ben Ellison.

The four-year-old is yet to be out of the top three in six starts at Newcastle, including a winning debut in March last year and two second-place finishes by under a length this season.

2021 Melrose Handicap winner Valley Forge will line-up under David Probert, running off a career-best rating of 93 following victory last time out at Haydock.

He bids to land trainer Andrew Balding his first success in the Northumberland Plate, with the trainer also saddling Spirit Mixer, Star Calibur, Auriferous, Mellow Magic and Morando.
