Gutsy Gustavus Weston lands the Phoenix Sprint for Joe Murphy

Fethard trainer Joe Murphy is usually good for at least one stakes winner a year, but he is doing pretty well in that sphere this season.
Gustavus Weston added to his tally by landing the Group 3 Qatar Racing And Equestrian Club Phoenix Sprint Stakes at the Curragh, which means that from nine winners this season, Murphy has saddled a Group 3 winner, a Listed winner, and a Premier Handicap winner. Not bad.
This lightly-raced son of Equiano came good in a big way here, coming through on the near side to lead entering the final furlong under Gary Carroll and holding off the persistent effort of his fellow three-year-old Woody Creek to win by a neck, with the ageless Gordon Lord Byron two-and-a-half lengths back in third. It was a big winner for Carroll too, who landed a treble at Sligo on Wednesday.
