The 1997 Nunthorpe is remembered for one thing and one thing only: as a triumph for gender equality after pioneering jockey Alex Greaves became the first female to win a Group 1 in Britain when dead-heating on Ya Malak.

The passing of time has shown Greaves's achievement to be all the more laudable but bubbling beneath the milestone moment were many undercurrents in a race that had pretty much everything.

Horses from local stables 15 miles apart fought out an exhilarating finish, Kevin Darley produced a heroic ride in the face of adversity on Coastal Bluff and a family divided on the track shared a famous victory.
