There may be no Arc bid this weekend for Cheveley Park after Estrange was taken out following a dirty scope, but they have had better luck in the first of nine races on ITV this afternoon as Cajole won the October Stakes at Ascot under young jockey Tyler Heard.

And that means we're out of time for today's live blog, but stay tuned to the Racing Post website and app for all the reaction to the big races to come before we turn our attention firmly towards the Arc this evening.

For more reaction to Caballo De Mar's Cadran victory head here.

And here's all you need to know for the rest of the afternoon:

Coltrane retired after gallant second

Some breaking news from Longchamp as Coltrane has been retired following his gallant runner-up effort in the Cadran.

He has been a fine servant for the Andrew Balding yard having won nine times in 35 starts, most notably landing the 2022 Doncaster Cup and 2023 Lonsdale Cup.

Balding's wife Anna Lisa said: "That's him, he's retired now. He's going to go out on that. He's had an amazing life, he's 100 per cent sound. He's loved his racing and now it's time to go and do another job.

"He's going to stay with us and become our hack, it'll be lovely. His stable is ready for him. It's another great run and we're delighted. He always runs with his heart and that was another one."

Caballo De Mar, who won the German St Leger last month, looks a stayer really on the up, despite this not being the strongest of Group 1s.

Marquand and the winner tracked the front-running Coltrane throughout and nobody else could really get involved.

Coltrane fought back admirably after being headed by Caballo De Mar in the straight and made a fight of it all the way to the line, but Marquand had enough to hold him off.

A fantastic result for Newmarket trainer George Scott and Bahraini owners Victorious Forever.

'It's very soft'

The action is already under way at Longchamp with the Joseph O'Brien-trained Tennessee Stud winning the Group 2 Prix Chaudenay under the in-form Dylan Browne McMonagle. Emit was second to give the trainer a one-two.

The winning rider said: "He travelled round well and quickened better than I expected to on the conditions and left me clear with a target on my back but he was tough until the line. He's a top-class horse over that trip.

"The ground is proper soft and a bit slower in places. It's breezy as well so the conditions are tough."

Tom Marquand was riding Native Irish for Amy Murphy in the race and when asked for his thoughts on the ground said: "It's very soft. It's going to be tough work and you're going t0 need to stay, but the track is in great condition given the rain."

Our first Group 1 of the day is creeping up on us with the Prix du Cadran (12.58) less than 30 minutes away.

Only three runners were initially declared for the 2m4f Group 1 before the field was thankfully boosted by five supplementary entries.

Why did this happen and who is in line to take advantage of a weak race? Find out here.

Cinderella's shall go to the ball - Buick

Cinderella's Dream: favourite for the Duke of Cambridge
William Buick and Cinderella's DreamCredit: Edward Whitaker

William Buick believes Cinderella's Dream has "a lot in her favour" as she bids for another Group 1 success in the BetMGM Sun Chariot Stakes (2.40) at Newmarket.

"She's a top class filly," he said on ITV's Opening Show. "She got an elusive domestic Group 1 in the Falmouth and we're chasing another one here.

"Her form suggests her best trip is eight to nine furlongs, so she's got a lot in her favour. The stronger the gallop the better for her and it looks like it's going to play that way, but she's a very easy filly to ride as she can do it any which way."

Cinderella's Dream, who is 5-2 joint-favourite with Fallen Angel, has shown her best form on faster ground and Buick does not expected conditions to be a problem.

"I'd say it's going to ride near on good ground as the track dries very well - it's going to be quite nice racing ground," he said. "The wind will be behind us and push us up the track as it does with a tailwind."

Melbourne Cup favourite hardens after Turnbull win

From dawn til dusk, this is a day of big races from across the world, starting in Australia this morning when Sir Delius shortened as favourite for the Melbourne Cup following a dominant victory in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.

Sir Delius, who is trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, powered away from his rival in the closing stages to win by a length and three quarters, after which his Melbourne Cup odds were cut to 4-1 (from 6).

The four-year-old, who finished eighth in last year's Arc when trained in France, has won three of his four starts since moving to Australia.

Al Riffa's Melbourne Cup backers might want to look away now because it was pretty impressive stuff from Sir Delius . . .

Soft ground at Longchamp

There is rain in the forecast for Paris

Scott Burton, our man in Paris, has a ground update from Longchamp before the first day of Arc weekend.

The penetrometer is now 3.8 and "tres souple", which is the equivalent of soft on the GoingStick. The rain could carry on until midday, with the risk of between 2-5mm.

With conditions continuing to ease, find out here who could thrive and who may be hindered in Sunday's showpiece (3.05).

Going change at Newmarket

At Newmarket the going has eased slightly to good, good to soft in places (from good) following 12mm of rain in the last 24 hours. Guests of 45mph are expected in the afternoon, peaking during racing.

Here are the going descriptions at each of the tracks:

Ascot: Soft

Curragh: Soft to heavy (straight) and soft, soft to heavy in places (round)
