Easterby hopes money goes to money – and goes to a good cause

If you ever fancied getting your hands on some of Mick Easterby's money, now is your chance. Though it's to be hoped it won't come cheap.

In a move reminiscent of the US financial authorities opening up Fort Knox and putting the country's gold reserves on the market, the legendary trainer has announced he is selling some coins.

Not just any coins, of course. When you are reputed to own half the land in Yorkshire, plenty of ancient pennies, denarii and the like are sure to turn up on your estate, along with other artefacts so old that they date back even beyond the start of 'Spittin Mick's' training career.

Now Easterby has decided to auction them off in order to raise money for Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

"For many years now the fields around the farm in Sheriff Hutton have been slowly giving up their secrets," said the trainer. "It's an area steeped in history and I'm gobsmacked by what's turned up.

"There are axe heads from the Stone Age about 4,500 years ago, artefacts from the Romans and coins from various times over the last two millennia, as well as fossils from way, way back when our Alice was a little girl.

"Learning about what happened in an area where I've lived for the past seven decades has been marvellous but it's now time to pass these treasures on. So I'm offering my collection for sale with all proceeds going to help those wonderful people at the Yorkshire Air Ambulance."

A similar sale of Easterby's 50-year-old green jacket to York racecourse raised £500 for the same charity earlier this summer.
