Steve Palmer's Senior Open preview
Padraig Harrington was welling up on the first tee at Portrush last week and threw himself fully into another Open. The Irishman tees off atop the Senior Open market at Sunningdale this week, but this links master will be disappointed that the event is on a heathland layout this time.
Miguel Angel Jimenez, who has a fantastic record in the Senior Open and has already won a senior Major this year, is more tempting than Harrington. The Spaniard has form figures of 4-2 from the last two Senior Opens at Sunningdale and should be a factor there again at the age of 61.
Steve Palmer's top tip
Soren Kjeldsen 14-1
Accuracy is the key to success at Sunningdale and Soren Kjeldsen built a long European Tour career based on his supreme precision. The neat and tidy Dane is perfectly suited to this week's assignment and can draw upon a wealth of course experience.
Kjeldsen used to be based in Ascot, which is less than ten minutes from Sunningdale, so he doubtless brings course knowledge to the Senior Open as he bids to get his Champions Tour career off to a flying start.
Kjeldsen turned 50 in May and has already finished second twice on the Champions Tour. He lost a playoff to Jimenez in the Principal Charity Classic last month, then finished second alongside Alex Cejka in the CT pairs event. Kjeldsen has been solid in the CT Majors and closed with a 64 for fifth place in the Dick's Open last time out.
Kjeldsen's maiden European Tour title came in Scotland and his last one came in Northern Ireland. He was ninth in the 2016 Open and had four top-tens in the BMW PGA at Wentworth, which is not far from Sunningdale. More UK success could be coming on Sunday.
Next best bet
Richard Green 35-1
Another player who is extremely comfortable in this part of the world is Richard Green, who had a European Tour base in Bagshot in Surrey, which is eight minutes down the road from Sunningdale. Like Kjeldsen, Green did well in the BMW PGA at Wentworth, posting three top-eights, and the Aussie had a great record in the UK generally, finishing fourth in the 2007 Open.
A three-time European Tour champion, Green can hit the ground running, and, like Kjeldsen, his great strength has always been driving accuracy, which is the key to success at Sunningdale.
Green has finished seventh and second in the last two Senior Opens. He turned 54 in February but remains as fit as a fiddle and steady form in the Open build-up suggests he will be a title contender.
Other selection
Felipe Aguilar 140-1
Like Kjeldsen, Felipe Aguilar came through CT Q School and is a 50-year-old feeling young and fresh in comparison to others on the roundbellies circuit. The Chilean is another precise operator who can thrive at Sunningdale.
Aguilar won twice on the Alps Tour in 2003, twice on the Challenge Tour in 2007, then twice on the European Tour, as well as notching countless titles in his homeland. His last Chilean Tour success came in December, 2023, so he can still mix it with the youngsters.
Aguilar has posted five top-20s in his CT rookie campaign, including in each of his last two starts. He recorded three top-20s in the BMW PGA at Wentworth in his European Tour days and appears massively underrated in the Senior Open betting.
