'We've hit a few crossbars recently so it's lovely to get a winner' - 2,200gns bargain buy gets Ben Haslam off the cold list

Ben Haslam took his name off the cold list as Pal Joey gave the trainer a welcome winner in the second division of the 6f handicap.
Haslam had not enjoyed a victory for 49 days, but he ended that wait with the Toni Marley-owned three-year-old's half-length success. It was also a first win for the son of Showcasing, who was bought for just 2,200gns earlier this year.
Haslam said: "We've hit a few crossbars recently so it's lovely to get a winner. He was very well picked out by the owner, too, as he was bought so cheaply with a very lovely pedigree and was bred by Juddmonte.
"We're very happy with that. He's still a bit immature and inexperienced, but he really had to knuckle down at the end. He shouldn't be overly bothered by the handicapper and I thought out of the field he ought to improve the most."
He added: "This track suited him, but he'll be a nice horse for the autumn as he likes to get his toe in a little bit. That's as quick as he'd want it."
Doughty delight
Jack Doughty made the perfect start for Ed Bethell with Rogue Temptation's success in the 6f novice.
Doughty struck on his first ride for the Group 1-winning trainer with the two-year-old's length-and-a-half victory.
Baker's back
George Baker secured his first winner since Get It's Wokingham Stakes victory at Royal Ascot when Beauld As Brass narrowly obliged in the 1m6f handicap.
