For his countless friends and admirers, precious few of whom will have backed his 66-1 heroine of the July Cup, it was a moment that gladdened the heart. For the man himself, No Half Measures's triumph was the realisation of a dream that had endured for a decade and almost fizzled out.
There was a widespread belief last year's 2,000 Guineas hero Notable Speech would cope with the drop in trip and land Europe's premier sprint. Class will out was the reason given for confidence in the favourite's claims. Class will out is just one of the reasons why Hughes has broken his Group 1 hoodoo.
