'This has hit the weighing room the hardest that I can remember' - minute's silence held in memory of Tommie Jakes

The racing community came together at Newmarket and observed a minute's silence before the second race on the card following the death of apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes on Thursday at the age of 19.

John Egan summed up the atmosphere in the weighing room, and said: "I've been in racing a long time and seen a lot of tragedy but this has hit the weighing room the hardest that I can remember."

Egan was speaking after steering Roach Power to success in the 5f handicap for Michael Wigham.

Spicy Marg too hot for rivals

Spicy Marg made her class count when putting 18 rivals to the sword in the Listed Bosra Sham Fillies' Stakes.

The well-backed 13-8 favourite was difficult to spot a furlong and a half out in a packed field but her orange cap was soon prominent when she switched right to win going away from Azleet.

Just like when scoring here in May, the Michael Bell-trained filly was well on top at the finish and could be in line for a Classic trial next year.

Owner Emma Banks said: "Michael is a genius. I wasn't confident even though she was favourite but she did it well and it's nice to end the season with a convincing win."

Bell added: This was only her second run over six furlongs but on that you'd say she'd get further. We could look at something like the Nell Gwyn in the spring."

More for Moore

Promising apprentice Toby Moore rode his second winner and first at his home track when steering Castle Rock to victory for his employers Charlie Appleby and Godolphin in the 6f novice stakes.

The 17-year-old jockey guided the 8-13 chance clear of market rival Hallo Spaceboy despite drifting left in the closing stages.

Moore was greeted by his father Ryan on his way back to the weighing room and had to call in to the stewards' room before getting his prize, which due to his age was quickly changed from champagne to glassware.

The winning jockey said: "It's great to win on my first ride at my local track. I got a nice lead into the race off Jack Mitchell and my mount had won at the track before, so we knew he would finish off well. I've no big plans for winter. I'll just be riding for Charlie Appleby."

Smart prospect

The final two-day meeting of the year has unearthed some smart juveniles over the years and Yazin kept up the trend when defying a penalty in the 7f novice stakes.

Merchant finished down the field a year ago for William Haggas and the trainer had the runner-up this year in the shape of Princling, who headed the group on the stands' rail but had no answer to those up the middle headed by the eventual winner under Rab Havlin.

The winner is owned by Shadwell Stud, whose racing manager Angus Gold said: "Yazin was pretty impressive to win like that under a penalty and comes from a very good family as his dam is closely related to a Group 1 winner. He's always been a good looker and he's a nice prospect for 2026."
