What a difference from a year ago. Following the novice hurdle on this card 12 months ago, trainer Sue Smith, jockey Danny Cook and owner Aafke Clarke were trying to work out exactly what had happened after one of the more bizarre races of the season.

Midnight Shadow, sent off the 1-4 favourite, unseated Cook after becoming distracted by following the errant leader virtually off the course, leaving the way for a 66-1 shot to claim victory.

The race panned out much more favourably for the trio this time as giant grey Captain Moirette, who was absent for exactly 1,000 days before this season, bounded to a decisive win.
