A Sure Welcome watched Phoenix Star drive past him in the closing stages of the 6f handicap only to dig deep and nab victory on the line in a thrilling finish.

The seven-year-old was travelling superbly turning for home before Phoenix Star came with a surging run to gain the initiative under Oliver Stammers.

However, with Ryan Tate in the saddle, A Sure Welcome battled back bravely to gain a second win in his last three starts for trainer John Spearing and the Kinnersley Partnership.

"I've got of a relationship with this fella and he always runs well even in defeat," Tate said. "It's good to get one on the board for John and the owners.

"If given half a chance I knew he'd battle and when I asked him for his max effort in that final half furlong he gave it to me."

Promise from Fabricated

Fabricated made an excellent start to her racing career with a last-gasp success in the first division of the 7f fillies' maiden.

A daughter of Pride Of Dubai, Fabricated swept up the inside rail to nail favourite Algheed – who was later disqualified and placed third – to make a winning debut under Danny Tudhope for owners Clipper Logistics.

The three-year-old cost 115,000gns as a yearling and Tudhope said: "She was lugging left the whole way round but she's a lovely scopey filly and should have a nice future.

"When she goes on turf I'd have thought she wants a bit of cut in the ground as she's big. She's got a lot of experience there and she'll improve for that."
