Ian Williams' Irish foray foiled as 7lb claimers help Philip Rothwell enjoy a 72-1 double

Philip Rothwell celebrated a 72-1 double thanks to the victories of Only One Plan and That’s About Right.
Only One Plan had bumped into Petrol Heat on his last visit to the track in June, but there was nothing of the calibre of the one-time Galway Hurdle favourite in the field this time for the 2m2f handicap hurdle and he stayed on strongly under 7lb claimer Tiernan Power Roche to collar Mary from the Ian Williams stable close home.
Rothwell completed his double in the 2m5½f rated novice hurdle as That’s About Right stormed up the home straight to put eight lengths between himself and runner-up Dinoland. He returned at odds of 8-1 and Conor Owens, another 7lb claimer, did the steering.
Lad strikes again
Tullyveery Lad had unshipped his rider on his previous two starts but put in a clear round to land the 2m7½f handicap chase under Donagh Meyler.
The previous course winner was sent off 7-2 favourite and was winning for the third time this year for Ray Cody.
No joy for Williams
British trainer Williams had hoped to tick Downpatrick off his list of tracks at which he'd saddled a winner at the first time of asking, but he will have to come back as Mary's second was followed by a seventh-placed finish for a four-year-old gelding who is not quite as talented as the man he's named after, Finn Russell. That 2m2f handicap hurdle was won by Darragh O'Keeffe aboard Portnacoo.
