'I wouldn't mind a few more like him' - Brian Barr scores again with bargain buy

Dorset-based trainer Brian Barr and conditional jockey Patrick Cowley enjoyed only their second win of the season as Manor Park gamely held on to take the 2m handicap hurdle by three-quarters of a length.

The six-year-old, who opened the pair's account when he bolted up at Newton Abbot last month, bounced back from a poor run as favourite last time out.

Barr said: "He’s very genuine and easy to train. My girlfriend Daisy rides him out every day and does a great job with him. I wouldn't mind a few more like him, that’s for sure.

"Since we started training we’ve always done particularly well in spring and summer. I don’t know if it’s because we buy extra horses off the Flat to go jumping but they tend to go well on decent ground. We don’t spend a lot of money, so it’s important you get the right horses. This fella was only three grand out of Alan King's."

The dual-purpose trainer added: "It’s important to know your market. There’s no point in me going out and spending 20 grand on a horse because I know I would never sell it as I don’t have owners who spend that kind of money. It’s about getting the right horses and the right people."

Connor Brace rode his first winner for 155 days when steering bottomweight Watching Brief to victory in the 2m7½f handicap hurdle for his grandfather David, who trains near Bridgend.

Brace, who rode out his claim in February, had gone 33 rides without a winner but ended the drought in style with his 50th career success over hurdles.
