The old and the new combined on the track's biggest day of the year as apprentice Conor McGovern announced himself on the British stage by steering Waarif to victory in the historic AGMA Stablemate Carlisle Bell.

Two days after riding his first winner since joining David O'Meara from Mick Halford, the 22-year-old from Clones in Northern Ireland came with a well-timed challenge to nail longtime leader Raselasad in the £31,200 contest, which was first run in 1599.

"I had a nice position going round as the leader set a good gallop and he stretched out and battled to the line," said McGovern, who rode 35 winners in Ireland.
