Who tops the shortlist in a competitive handicap hurdle at Navan?

Give Him A Chance is the most interesting one here for Philip Rothwell. He is a progressive sort who has been in fine form since the summer and ran a career best when runner-up in a decent heat at Cheltenham last month.

The six-year-old has taken big strides forward since landing a Kilbeggan handicap off 89 in June, following up at Killarney off 9lb higher in August where he pulled well clear with another rival, before shaping nicely when a staying-on third at Listowel in September.

He went off a largely unconsidered 25-1 shot at Cheltenham over two miles and five furlongs last time out but finished off his race well, crossing the line four-and-three-quarter lengths behind a fellow outsider in 33-1 chance Lavender Hill Mob.

The winner was far better positioned throughout, however, while Give Him A Chance still had something of a mountain to climb approaching two out. He was quickly picking off rivals on the outside in the straight and did well to get as close as he did considering his momentum was curbed when getting in tight to the last

These are calmer waters and he should go very close.

Greatness Awaits is interesting back hurdling having not been beaten far over fences at Catterick last time and he could appreciate a return to soft ground, while Jack Kennedy takes the ride on San Hilario, who has been consistent in his short career.

He had a couple of good runs in maiden company last season, most notably at Gowran, and ran an encouraging race when second to Billy Lee Swagger at Fairyhouse on just his second start in a handicap.

Mavetherave also has some useful maiden form but an opening mark of 110 looks stiff enough on his first start for Ross Crawford, a new trainer to the ranks. Barry Connell's Supreme Ruler returns after a lengthy absence but looks well treated on his bumper form, although testing ground might not be to his liking.

Of the rest, Ms Agartha Yeats makes appeal for a stable who landed a winner at Punchestown on Thursday. She finished off last season with an eye-catching effort behind Jump Allen in a competitive race at Naas and the form has worked out well.

She only got as far as the first on her return, so fitness might still be an issue, but she looks nicely treated off the same mark as that Naas effort.

What they say

Finbarr Hand, trainer of Ms Agartha Yeats
She fell at the first the last day, she jumped it perfect but just crumpled on landing. Her best asset is her jumping usually. Her run at Naas before that was a proper run as she completely dropped herself out and came through them. She had a good lay-off and we were hoping to get the run in at Fairyhouse and she would've been spot on. We've only a few horses, so it's hard to get a reading on it but we had a winner on Thursday, so they're in good nick.

Philip Rothwell, trainer of Give Him A Chance
It was a cracking run at Cheltenham but he's gone up 5lb [Irish mark] even though he was well beaten and I'm not quite sure why. I hope it's right but I think it's a tough assignment. Maybe he'll be better on the softer ground, that's what I'm hoping. He's a young horse and is progressing, so hopefully there's more to come.

Ross Crawford, trainer of Mavetherave
He's possibly not particularly well-treated on his first run in handicaps but he's always run his race and he's been unlucky not to have won. He was second at Downpatrick with Sam [Ewing] on and he's on again. The ground is a bit of an unknown as he ran on it at Navan in a bumper and struggled a wee bit, but I'm hoping he's stronger now. If he handles it, I'm hoping he won't be too far away.
