Horse involved in controversial Wexford unseat returns for different trainer

Punting pointers for some of Thursday's meetings

Chepstow: course specialist returns with record aim

Connie's Rose attempts to achieve a record-equalling seventh Flat win at Chepstow for local trainer Grace Harris in the 6f handicap (3.45) after a string of good efforts this season.

She has gone close three times already in 2025 trying to match Peak Storm's tally at the track and Harris adds the first-time visor to replace cheekpieces.

Connie's Rose remains on a mark of 67 and she was beaten a short-head off 1lb higher in May over the course and distance. She is usually better over six furlongs than five and Kieran O'Neill takes the ride.

Harris, who is operating at a 23 per cent strike-rate in the last fortnight, said: "It's going really well and hopefully it will continue for the rest of the season. It's really busy and we've got lots of new faces in the yard, which is good."

Connie's Rose stumbled at the start last time and has been running consistently. Harris said: "She's been running well without winning and normally she wins at the beginning of the turf season, but I suppose this year we started off a higher mark. The handicapper knows her inside out now, so he doesn't give us much leeway.

"We're trying new headgear tomorrow. She's probably the most genuine horse we have, but because she jumps out and has to make all, when they do come upsides it might get a bit more out of her. She won when we put cheekpieces on her for the first time last year, so hopefully she can run a nice race."

Epsom: Ladies' Derby the highlight

The Ladies' Derby (7.35) is the highlight at Epsom with seven of the eight jockeys vying for a first win in the prestigious amateurs' race.

Becky Smith, the only rider to have won the race when successful on Miss Mulligan in 2022, rides One Cool Dreamer for Alan King.

Margot Scudamore, who is the fifth-generation jockey from the famous racing family, has a live chance with Justice Roll, although he has never raced on the Flat for Gary Moore. Gordon Grey, for Brodie Hampson, is the only course winner in the eight-runner field.

Hampson said: "Ben Brookhouse messaged me a couple of weeks ago and booked me for the ride, so I'm really looking forward to it.

"Epsom's a unique track; some horses love it and some horses hate it, but the fact he's already won there and won so impressively, he obviously likes it, so that's a lovely feeling. He's higher in the weights than last year, but I'd still really fancy his chances. He looks a straightforward horse to ride and Ben says he's in great order.

"He won over hurdles last time, which is another thing in his favour because it shows he's in good form. I look at every race the same, but it would be massive to win it and it's one of those races you want to get ticked off. This looks by the far the best chance I've had in one of the bigger races."

Hamilton: well-bred prospect faces tough test on handicap debut

Benbatl's talented half-brother Sallaal is sent to Scotland again by Roger Varian, who hopes the three-year-old can become one to watch in the second half of the season.

The Frankel colt flopped in the Feilden Stakes at Newmarket on his comeback but bounced back in a novice stakes race over Thursday's course and distance in May.

Varian, whose former stable star Defoe won at Hamilton on his climb to Group 1 level, has had to be patient with Sallaal due to firm ground and withdrew him from the Golden Gates Handicap at Royal Ascot last month due to quick conditions. A wet forecast this week has worked in his favour.

Sallaal has an entry in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York in August but faces a tough test on his handicap debut (3.22) off a mark of 97 with English Oak, a winner at Royal Ascot last season, in the line-up.

Killarney: horse in controversial Wexford unseat returns

Redwood Queen, the horse at the centre of a controversial unseat of jockey Philip Byrnes at Wexford last month, has her first run since the incident for a different owner, trainer and jockey.

Byrnes came off when clear after the final hurdle in May, which led to an investigation by the Irish Racing Regulatory Board as the horse's odds had drifted alarmingly before the race.

Redwood Queen will bid for a repeat victory in the 2m4½f mares' hurdle (5.32) on her first start for Cian Collins while Danny Gilligan has the ride.

She carried the silks of Cathal Byrnes at Wexford but will run for the Del Boy Partnership, who have only had registered horses in training with Collins.

Leicester: Noble Horizon sets the standard

A Leicester novice was the launchpad chosen by William Haggas for Baaeed and he returns to the track hoping the consistent Noble Horizon can post a first success.

The three-year-old, who will be ridden by Tom Marquand, has already achieved a rating of 87 having run four times in novice or maiden company. He has gone closer on each occasion, with his latest effort just a neck defeat in a four-runner event at Newmarket in June, and the Kingman colt sets a good standard in the 1m2f novice stakes (2.30).

Haggas has made a flying start to July with ten winners while he has had a winner and a second from his three course runners in 2025.

Worcester: Hammer can break drought

David Pipe is 0-32 in the new jumps season but a slow start could finally change as the consistent Hammer Dan returns to the track for the 2m7f handicap hurdle (7.50).

The Grand National-winning trainer has had five seconds already this season and the seven-year-old is responsible for two of them, including when last seen over the course and distance at the start of the month. The handicapper nudged him up 3lb for a length defeat but he should remain competitive again.

Betty's Tiara is another out to break a frustrating spell in the 2m7f maiden hurdle (7.20) for Ben Pauling. She is winless in ten starts over hurdles but has been second five times, including in her last two races.
