Could the Pat Eddery unearth another Rosallion? Analysis and quotes for overachieving Listed race

As Listed races go the Pat Eddery Stakes often punches above its weight and particularly in the past two seasons.

The first two in the 2024 running filled those positions in the Grade 1 Summer Mile at Woodbine six weeks later. Even more noteworthy was Rosallion’s victory the previous campaign. He toyed with horses who are now rated 112, 114, 112, 118 and 114 before becoming the best miler of his age as a three-year-old.

The potential in this field is clear and the unbeaten Reciprocated is an understandable early favourite. After a smooth victory in a good time on his debut at Nottingham, Reciprocated was less impressive on the clock at Carlisle next time out, but followed up under a penalty with minimal fuss.

An extra furlong poses another question of the Havana Grey colt given his sprint pedigree, although he has hit the line hard on both starts at 6f.

The others attempting 7f for the first time are Cape Ashizuri, Italica and Tricky Tel, who have won their last five races between them. Italica and Tricky Tel are also sired by precocious sprinters, whereas once-raced Ayr maiden winner Cape Ashizuri is bred for middle distances and should thrive for an extra furlong.

Bolstering the Pat Eddery further is the presence of a Godolphin colt who won a maiden by ten lengths last time. It is expected that Time To Turn, while a nice prospect for Charlie Appleby, may struggle to reverse Newbury form with the undefeated A Bit Of Spirit. His ceiling may be the highest among a promising group of juveniles.

What they say

Clive Cox, trainer of A Bit Of Spirit
He's made a pleasing start so far. This is a much deeper race but we're hopeful of similar progress.

John Quinn, joint-trainer of Cape Ashizuri
We feel he merits the step up in class. He galloped through the line at Ayr and the step up in trip should help; it will need to, though, as this looks a good race.

Tom Dascombe, trainer of Italica
He’s improved with every run. He's a seven-furlong horse or a miler all day long so the step up in trip at Ascot will really suit him.

Karl Burke, trainer of Reciprocated
He's an exciting horse and he'll improve for the step up in trip although I wouldn't want the ground to dry out much more. Good ground would be perfect for him on a stiff track.

Charlie Appleby, trainer of Time To Turn
He was impressive on his last start and has progressed with racing. He'll have to reverse the Newbury form with A Bit Of Spirit but goes there in good order and conditions should suit.

Hugo Palmer, trainer of Tricky Tel
He injured his foot on the way to the royal meeting and it's just taken a bit of time to come right. He hit the line strongly at Chester and it was a surprise he organised himself so well there as he's a big horse. I'm excited to see him up in trip and on a straight track here.
