Sussex Champion Chase voided after Gary Moore runner fatally injured

The feature Sussex Champion Chase was voided after Golden Boy Grey was fatally injured. The Gary Moore-trained runner sustained the injury after the second fence and was pulled up by Jamie Moore.

The remaining four runners continued but were told to stop after the sixth fence as they were unable to safely pass the injured runner in the home straight, which led to the race being voided.

The stewards' report read: "The clerk of the course confirmed the 'stop race' procedures were implemented as a result of a runner suffering an injury in the home straight and that it was not possible for the rest of the field to safely pass on the next circuit.

"The stewards were satisfied all procedures were carried out correctly and that all jockeys, having seen the orange and yellow 'stop race' flags, correctly pulled up. In light of the orange and yellow 'stop race' flags being deployed, the stewards declared the race void."

Golden Boy Grey claimed five victories in 11 starts for Moore and owner Ruth Arnold, and had been sent off 2-1 favourite for Monday's contest.

Sussex strike

Jack Wildman continued his fruitful partnership with Light N Strike after the pair claimed a second course-and-distance success in the 2m1f handicap chase.

The six-year-old made just his second start since November and romped to a 14-length victory, marking the third British success for the 20-year-old jockey since moving to Emma Lavelle's yard in August.

"Jack gets on very well with him and it was a promising run," Lavelle said. "Light N Strike really enjoyed himself and the tempo of the race suited him perfectly, he just travelled right through."

Gordon on top

It was another successful afternoon for Chris Gordon, who claimed a 62-1 treble the day after landing the Sussex Champion Hurdle.

Sami Bear won the novice handicap hurdle under Tom Cannon before he guided Blade Runner to a comfortable success in the novice handicap chase. Blame The Game completed a fine day for Gordon when leading home The Tin Miner for a stable 1-2 in the closing handicap hurdle, again in the hands of Cannon.
