Exciting Godolphin juveniles help William Buick notch fabulous four-timer
Wednesday: Sandown
William Buick was in excellent form in the brilliant sunshine, winning on his first four rides and taking his seasonal tally to 136.
The rider lost out narrowly to Oisin Murphy in the jockeys' championship last year but is comfortably clear this time around, with his final win aboard I'll Be There taking him 55 ahead of nearest pursuer Hollie Doyle.
Buick has an enviable cast of Godolphin juveniles to assist him in his quest to become champion for the first time and Local Dynasty and Striking Star showed their quality with comfortable wins on testing ground.
Of Local Dynasty, who won the mile novice stakes under a penalty, Buick said: "Things didn't go his way when he was fifth in the Acomb. It was a slightly biased race and he got lost.
"I'm delighted to get him back here today and stepping up to a mile suited him. He handled the ground but he's better on good. He's a big, strong horse and he'll be even better next year."
Well-bred debutant Striking Star made a smooth start to his career in the 7f novice stakes, which was won by five-time Group 1 winner Palace Pier in 2019.
The jockey added: "That was pleasing. He's very well-bred and a beautiful-looking horse and I liked what he did. He would have learned plenty and there will be more to come. He travelled very well and picked up real good."
Boy becomes a man
Bayside Boy could have either Champions Day or Arc weekend on his agenda after getting his career back on track under Buick in the feature Chasemore Farm Fortune Stakes.
It was Breeders' Day at the Esher track and the win was a second on the afternoon for his dam Alava, who also produced Yarmouth scorer Lord Of Biscay. Bayside Boy was trainer Roger Varian's 100th success of the campaign.
Richard Ryan, representing owners Teme Valley, said: "We've always thought an awful lot of him and his two-year-old form was very close to the very top.
"We've had an incredibly hot summer which hasn't helped so we've had to be patient. It's been a bit of a frustrating year but he's excelled on conditions that suit.
"Champions Day is certainly not off the table – he'll go there or to Arc weekend for either the Prix Dollar or Prix Daniel Wildenstein."
Stars parading
Coneygree was among the retired racehorses parading before racing and although there weren't any fences to be jumped on course, the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner would have been at home on the sticky ground.
