'It's essential that every avenue is explored' - trainers' body calls on HRI to exhaust all options to save Thurles

The Irish Racehorse Trainers Association (IRTA) has called on Horse Racing Ireland to explore "every avenue to secure the future of Thurles racecourse" after last week's shock announcement the track would close with immediate effect.
Riona Molony, who along with her late husband Pierce and the rest of her family ran Thurles for 50 years, cited "ever increasing industry demands and the cost of doing business" as a major factor in the decision. HRI was scheduled to meet the Molony family this week to discuss their position but the meeting was postponed.
"It's a huge blow and the news came as a massive shock," said IRTA chairman Feidhlim Cunningham. "Thurles is a great asset for our members. It could be relied upon to provide nicer ground during the winter months and is synonymous with jumps racing in Ireland. Aside from racedays, you have schooling races, and the track's facilities are used extensively. It's a rural track and it is vital for our members and the local community.
