'Bouncing' Qewy bound for Bendigo and ready to do himself justice

Qewy's Australian adventure saw him pick up cups at Geelong and Sandown in 2016 and on Wednesday he will bid to add the one at Bendigo to his crammed trophy cabinet.

Charlie Appleby sent out Francis Of Assisi to land the Group 3 contest 12 months ago and this time he has handed the baton over to his evergreen seven-year-old who finished fourth in last year's Melbourne Cup.

Qewy has established quite an illustrious CV since his tame debut for John Oxx back in the autumn of 2012. He has won five of his 27 starts and picked up £351,967 in prize-money.

There is $300,000 up for grabs at Bendigo and Chris Connett, Charlie Appleby's travelling head lad, believes Qewy is ready to rumble under Kerrin McEvoy after settling in well to the international quarantine centre at Werribee.

Connett said: "It's nice to see him carrying some condition. We're very positive that he's fit and will do himself justice there at Bendigo. He's bouncing. He's just been getting better and better each day."

Qewy recovered remarkably quickly from his races at last year's Spring Carnival, winning the Geelong and Sandown Cups with a fourth-placed Melbourne Cup finish sandwiched in between - all in the space less than a month.

So could Qewy recover in time to take up his engagement in the Melbourne Cup next Tuesday week?

"It is all guns blazing for Bendigo and we'll see where we stand after that. Hopefully he goes and wins nicely at Bendigo and then that opens the door for Melbourne. If he doesn't, then that might close the door," Connett replied.

Qewy faces only six rivals at Bendigo and is currently fighting it out for favouritism with the Darren Weir-trained Kiwia in the TAB market in Australia.

The ex-Aidan O'Brien-trained Foundry, now in the care of Robert Hickmott, is also in the line-up and will be ridden by Michael Dee.
