Another chapter in the most remarkable equine story of this season will be written if the horse who began his winning run off a mark of 55 can conquer some of Europe's top speedsters in the Darley July Cup. Finally, he will at least be permitted to try.

On the final day of Royal Ascot, the David Evans-trained winning machine put up the year's best performance by a three-year-old sprinter. He did not do that in the year's most important three-year-old sprint, though, for he was not allowed to run in it.

That was why there was not just euphoria in the Ascot winner's circle but also a sense of frustration.
