The body responsible for the integrity of starting prices said it does not have, nor want the power to compel racecourse bookmakers to bet to a certain margin.

Lord Donoughue, chairman of the Starting Price Regulatory Commission (SPRC), stated in the body's recently published annual report for 2017 there was confusion over its role from punter bodies calling for it to intervene when overrounds appeared too generous in bookmakers' favour.

He said: "It may be the 'regulatory' in Starting Price Regulatory Commission leads to an exaggerated view of our powers.
