'I was so lucky to get the ride, I was in my 50s for God's sake!' - the day Giant's Causeway won a classic Coral-Eclipse

On the eve of the 50th Eclipse sponsored by Coral, Maddy Playle looks back at a memorable running 25 years ago

The word 'monster' is used liberally these days but it feels wholly appropriate it is the one George Duffield chooses when he is asked to relive the 2000 Coral-Eclipse.

Duffield is referring to Giant's Causeway, the horse on whom he won arguably the greatest running of the Sandown Group 1 in the modern era.

Saturday's renewal is the 50th running of the race under the sponsorship of bookmakers Coral. The Coral-Eclipse began with a bang when Henry Cecil's 2,000 Guineas winner Wollow triumphed in 1976, and most recently it was won by another superstar in City Of Troy.
