Prize-money at home may often be a source of discontent but one thing's for sure: a multitude of British and Irish-based trainers successfully supplemented their earnings last year by bringing home the euros, dollars and dirhams.

Moreover, as the accompanying table shows, it was not just the usual high-profile suspects targeting major global races who hit the mark overseas during 2017.

Admittedly, the likes of messrs O'Brien (two generations), Gosden and Appleby led the way thanks to richly endowed victories in some of the world's most celebrated contests, but there were also notable successes for middle-tier trainers.
