Sometimes a jockey is merely a passenger aboard a willing racehorse. At other times a jockey imposes his will on a reluctant partner. Just occasionally the two will come together in perfect harmony, just like AP McCoy and Edredon Bleu in the 2000 Champion Chase.

There have been many spellbinding renewals of this two-mile test, which lends itself to great theatre. Close finishes are commonplace; the race can be won and lost in a moment of hesitation. No such frailties beset McCoy and his mount, who flew every fence in as thrilling an exhibition of jumping as has been seen at Cheltenham.
