Clare Balding made a CBE in Queen's birthday list for work in racing and charity

Clare Balding, the prominent TV presenter who hails from one of British racing's best-known families, has been made a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Balding's father Ian was responsible for the mighty Mill Reef and was champion trainer in 1971, while her late uncle Toby saddled winners of the Grand National, Cheltenham Gold Cup and Champion Hurdle. Her brother Andrew is a Classic-winning trainer and she was made an OBE for services to broadcasting and journalism in 2013.

An instantly recognisable face, Balding, 51, became the BBC's main presenter for racing in 1998 and has also worked on broadcasts from the Olympics and Wimbledon.

Balding, who has been recognised for her contribution to sport and charity, is not the only name with a racing link to be acknowledged in the list. MP Tracey Crouch, who sits on British racing's Horse Welfare Board, has also been made a CBE for parliamentary and public services.

John Warren, the Queen's long-standing bloodstock and racing adviser who spoke of the monarch's enduring passion for the sport after Perfect Alibi won at Newbury on Tuesday, was appointed a commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO).

The same honour went to Ascot's outgoing chief executive Guy Henderson, who is due to retire after this month's royal meeting – the eighth he has overseen. Henderson, who will be succeeded by Vivien Currie, has also been an owner and had a spell as chairman of Wincanton.
