Super-quick Kachy not for catching in finals day Sprint at Lingfield
The market suggested the 6f Betway All-Weather Sprint Championships revolved around Kachy and hindsight proved that to be correct, as the 4-9 favourite was in a different league to his fellow speedsters at Lingfield, striking for trainer Tom Dascombe and jockey Richard Kingscote.
A berth in stall eight might have proved a hindrance, but Kingscote was alert to the danger, with his mount showing blistering early toe as the rider dictated the fractions from the front.
The pair ominously took another couple of lengths from the closing pack around the home bend and in the blink of an eye the race was over, with nearest pursuer George Bowen in no position to lay down a challenge three and a quarter lengths back in second.
"His reaction time is second to none – after 100 yards he was two lengths clear," said a delighted Dascombe. "That's a hefty advantage and the race was over. This has been the plan ever since he had his wind op."
KACHY IN NUMBERS
6 age
25 runs
9 wins
3 wins since wind surgery
0 defeats since wind surgery
4.25 average winning distance in lengths since wind surgery
£402,799 earnings
1 jockeys to have ridden him
83 strike-rate (%) on all-weather
While Kachy is a top-class operator on the all-weather, he is yet to replicate that form on turf, but Dascombe cited a more professional attitude perhaps being the key to the recent improvement.
He added: "His form on the turf is not quite as good, even though he has been second in a Group 1. He hung left across the track when second to Battaash in the Temple Stakes last year, but he's not hanging now and looks better."
Bigger targets on grass may now beckon for the six-year-old and Paddy Power cut Kachy to 12-1 (from 20) for the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.
