Match preview

Sheffield United are enjoying rubbing shoulders with the elite and can continue their dream Premier League campaign by preventing red-hot favourites Manchester City from gaining maximum points at Bramall Lane.

Few get an easy game against the Blades, who have not lost by more than two goals in any of their 23 fixtures.

Even Liverpool had a tough time in Sheffield and needed an error from goalkeeper Dean Henderson to clinch a hard-fought 1-0 victory in September.

One of the most admirable qualities of Chris Wilder's side is they do not change their approach to cater for the opposition.

The Blades focus on doing what they do best - playing attacking, high-tempo football and ensuring all opponents are in for a serious examination.

And they gave City a tough game in a 2-0 defeat at the Etihad last month – restricting the champions to just four shots on target (all of them in the second half).

City will be looking to bounce back after Saturday's 2-2 draw at home to Crystal Palace which provided further examples of their defensive deficiencies.

They have shipped 27 goals – four more than the whole of last season and five more this term than Sheffield United, whose back three of Chris Basham, John Egan and Jack O'Connell were playing second-tier football in 2018-19.

That United have stayed so defensively solid is incredible, bearing in mind Basham and O'Connell are often encouraged to bomb forward.

They play with fluidity but are also disciplined with midfield players knowing when to plug defensive gaps.

After 23 games it is time they were given due credit for their achievements and it is highly unlikely they will be allowed to slacken off with Wilder at the helm.

Wilder criticised his team after a 1-1 draw at Arsenal on Saturday even though they won the shot count 12-11.

Beating City would set a new benchmark in a wonderful season and the Blades are not without hope.

Pep Guardiola's side won 6-1 at Aston Villa on their last road trip but have thrown in plenty of sub-par performances, including a famous 3-2 loss at Norwich.

City's suspect defence means they often have to score at least twice to win a game and that will not be an easy task against the Blades, who look overpriced to claim at least a draw.

Key stat

Sheffield United have lost one of their last eight home matches.
