Match preview

Liverpool still had hopes of completing an unprecedented quadruple when they hosted Tottenham in the Premier League in May but 12 games into the 2022-23 season, the Reds' main objective is a top-four finish.

They have taken just 16 points from a dozen league fixtures and their frustrating form is typified by their last four matches: hard-fought 1-0 wins over champions Manchester City and West Ham, followed by shock defeats to bottom club Nottingham Forest and a Leeds side who had taken two points from their previous eight games.

The underlying stats suggest that Liverpool can feel a little aggrieved about their lowly league position and bookmakers are certainly keen to keep them onside on the trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs are bigger than 2-1 for victory despite being ten points clear of Liverpool in the top-flight standings, having played one game more, and Sunday's contest is a puzzling one for punters.

Tottenham fans have been disgruntled by the sluggish brand of football under Antonio Conte this season but it is getting results – up to a point.

Spurs needed an injury-time goal from Rodrigo Bentancur last weekend to complete a 3-2 win at lowly Bournemouth, where they trailed 2-0, and another comeback was required at Marseille on Wednesday.

A 2-1 win at the Stade Velodrome clinched top spot in a tight Champions League group but it came at a price as Heung-Min Son, who shared the Premier League Golden Boot with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah last term, suffered a fractured cheekbone.

Tottenham began the weekend third in the table and in the last 16 of the Champions League but their poor record in big games this season is a cause for concern after significant summer investment in the squad.

Injuries to Richarlison, Cristian Romero, Dejan Kulusevski and now Son have not helped Conte's cause but his side have put in some limp performances in defeats away to Arsenal and Manchester United and at home to top-four hopefuls Newcastle.

They needed a 96th-minute equaliser from Harry Kane in August's 2-2 draw at Chelsea and, despite Liverpool's travails, the visitors could edge a tight game.

Four of the last nine meetings between the clubs have finished 2-1 to the Reds, which appeals at 9-1 in the correct-score betting, and striker Roberto Firmino has a fine record in this fixture.

The Brazilian has scored in three of Liverpool's last four away games at Tottenham, opening the scoring in January 2020 and January 2021, and his eight goals this term included league strikes against Newcastle and Arsenal.
