England's goalkeeping issues unresolved heading into Colombia clash

Belgium deserved win over Three Lions

Three things we learned...

1Pickford a concern heading into knockout phase
Some bookmakers cut England to win the World Cup after they dropped into the perceived easier half of the draw following the 1-0 defeat to Belgium but Colombia is no gimme in the last 16 and Gareth Southgate will want his first-choice keeper to improve.

Jordan Pickford was untested in the wins over Tunisia and Panama but he failed his first test, looking nervous in the first half before possibly using his wrong hand to attempt to save Adnan Januzaj's eventual winner.

Whether he was at fault for the goal or not, Pickford pushed too many shots back into the dangerous zone and needs to sharpen up.

2No back-up players push their claims for England start
Southgate handed his squad players the opportunity to impress and none took it.

Realistically, Marcus Rashford and Danny Rose were the two most likely to push their claims with Raheem Sterling and Ashley Young under threat, yet it seems likely England will revert to their usual team for the serious business of facing Colombia on Tuesday.

Rose offered width down the left, although could have done better defensively for the goal and England's best chance of the night fell to Rashford, who supposedly offers a greater goal threat than Sterling, but failed to find the net when bearing down on Thibaut Courtois's net.

3Boyata proves his worth for Red Devils
Vincent Kompany's 15-minute cameo off the bench will have warmed the hearts of Belgium outright backers, although his understudy Dedryck Boyata had a solid game at the heart of the Red Devils rearguard.

Boyata is supposed to be the weak link, but with Japan to come next the Celtic man should be fine, allowing Kompany to concentrate on being ready for the potential humdinger with Brazil in the last eight.
