The NFL's Hallowe'en night clash is not likely to turn into a horror show for either team but the Bengals should be screaming in celebration when the latest Battle of Ohio is over.

That has not been the pattern of recent seasons, with the Browns having swept their AFC North and state rivals in each of the last two years, but the teams appear to be headed in different directions for the time being.

The Bengals have won four of their last five games after a 0-2 start following last season's Super Bowl appearance and they will want this win as they bid to draw level at the top of the division with Thursday night's winners Baltimore.

Everything is headed south for the Browns, though. They started the year 2-1 and it would have been 3-0 but for an incredible collapse against the Jets that saw them throw away a 13-point lead in the last two minutes. Three of their four subsequent losses have been by three or fewer points too, along with an old-fashioned hammering by the Patriots in their most recent home game.

Confidence appears to be ebbing away and the Browns' bid to keep their heads above water until off-season quarterback acquisition Deshaun Watson's 11-game suspension is over appears to be sinking beneath waves of self-doubt.

Bengals QB Joe Burrow will have to adapt to not having star wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase this week due to injury, but Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd are no slouches and the Browns are dealing with a plethora of injuries themselves, including top cornerback Denzel Ward.
