Cardinals at Seahawks preview

Arizona produced what will surely be the most memorable play of the 2020 NFL season on Sunday and offences should again be the centre of attention when the Cardinals visit Seattle on Thursday.

The Cardinals secured a crazy 32-30 win over Buffalo with a 43-yard Hail Mary pass from quarterback Kyler Murray to DeAndre Hopkins, who was surrounded by three Bills defenders in the end zone.

The play was inevitably dubbed the Hail Murray, but it went a long way to glossing over the fact that the Cardinals seemed to have thrown away the victory when Buffalo had scored what looked the winning TD with 34 seconds left.

That drama left Arizona and Seattle level with the LA Rams at 6-3 in the NFC West and more fireworks are expected when they clash at CenturyLink Field.

The Cardinals won 37-34 in overtime when the teams met in Glendale in Week Seven and another thriller is anticipated with bookmakers setting the total points line at a lofty 57.5.

That was the first of three Arizona games in which both teams scored 30 points or more, while Seattle - sparky on offence but a shambles at times defensively - followed that with a 44-34 shootout defeat to Buffalo before a more sedate 23-16 loss to the Rams.

It should be end-to-end stuff again, and backing Christian Kirk to score a touchdown for Arizona appeals. The wide receiver scored twice in the teams' first meeting and had registered five TDs in three games before drawing a blank on Sunday.

Kirk benefits from defenders understandably putting their focus on stopping the elite Hopkins, and Sunday's miraculous play is unlikely to change that situation.

Key stats

  • Both teams have scored 30 points or more in Arizona's last three games.
  • The Cardinals have covered the handicap in five of their last six games against the Seahawks.
  • Seattle have rewarded their handicap backers in only one of their last five games.
