Steve Palmer's 3M Open preview

Sam Burns has not won a strokeplay event on the PGA Tour since May, 2022, but he turns 29 this week full of form and confidence, and is favourite for the 3M Open.

Burns and Maverick McNealy fill the first two places in the 3M Open betting, but the American duo both played four rounds in the Scottish Open before four rounds in the Open, competing on links terrain in a different time zone, so it is debatable whether they will have enough mental energy to sustain a 72-hole challenge in Minnesota straight after such a draining fortnight in the United Kingdom.

Steve Palmer's top tip

Michael Thorbjornsen 35-1

It seems only a matter of time before rising star Michael Thorbjornsen makes his PGA Tour breakthrough and this phenomenal driver could be set to rip TPC Twin Cities to shreds.

A fantastic amateur, Thorbjornsen has quickly made his mark on the PGA Tour, sharing second place in the Corales Puntacana Championship in April. Later that month he was fourth in the Zurich Classic pairs event alongside Karl Vilips.

Some injury niggles slowed Thorbjornsen after the Zurich, but he has bounced back to fitness and form in recent weeks, finishing fourth in the Rocket Classic, 21st in the John Deere Classic and 14th in the ISCO Championship.

Rounds of 66, 77 meant a missed cut at Twin Cities last year, but he had only just turned professional and was a raw talent. A year later, his rough edges are falling off, he is hitting his ball straighter, and his course-management is improving.

Recruiting JJ Jakovac as caddie after Collin Morikawa bemusingly sacked the top-class bagman has just added to the sense that Thorbjornsen is going places fast. A maiden Tour title could be coming in Minnesota on Sunday.

Next best bet

Kurt Kitayama 40-1

Another powerhouse is worth following. Kurt Kitayama is an elite ball-striker who won twice on the DP World Tour before claiming the biggest title of his career in the 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. He fended off a high-class field, with Rory McIlroy sharing second place.

Kitayama, fourth in the 2023 US PGA, has always possessed the tee-to-green class to challenge for prestigious honours, but his short-game can let him down. It is worth taking a chance on his putting this week and he should set up many birdie chances at Twin Cities.

Kitayama finished sixth on his 3M Open debut 12 months ago, despite having arrived jaded from four rounds in the Open the previous week. He looked to be flagging in the middle rounds.

This time, the 32-year-old has had perfect preparation. Fifth spot in the John Deere Classic at the start of this month was followed by 13 points in the final round of the Barracuda Championship on Sunday for 14th place. Only four players in the Barracuda field outscored Kitayama in the final round and he ended the tournament top of the greens-in-regulation statistics.

Other selection

Hayden Springer 125-1

Complete a team of long drivers with Hayden Springer, who is also a great putter, making him a perfect candidate for success at Twin Cities. The 28-year-old, who had a strong college career, won twice on the Canadian Tour in 2023 before personal tragedy struck when his daughter died at the age of three.

Springer displayed incredible mental toughness to earn a PGA Tour card at Q School a month later and has stayed on the Tour ever since. He had four top-tens last year, finishing third in the Puerto Rico Open and opening with a round of 59 in the John Deere Classic. This year he started with sixth place in the Farmers Insurance Open and his last two starts have been encouraging – 14th in the ISCO Championship and 23rd in the Barracuda.

Springer lost his form at this time last year, so 59th place on his 3M Open debut was not a bad effort in the circumstances. He is swinging much better on his return to Twin Cities.
