Richard Birch's play of the day at Musselburgh

Monhammer
Monhammer looks ready to strike off a highly attractive mark in division one of the 7f handicap (4.22) at Musselburgh.
The Linda Perratt-trained seven-year-old has been knocking hard on the door lately, including when three-quarters of a length second to the prolific Jannas Journey at Ayr three starts ago.
That form reads particularly well, with the winner now officially rated 18lb higher, and so does Monhammer’s Musselburgh third to Ahamoment last time out.
The dual course-and-distance winner wouldn’t have appreciated the very soft ground that day, but kept on nicely towards the finish after encountering trouble in running.
Ahamoment boosted the form with a fluent four-length success at Ayr on Thursday under a 5lb penalty, and Monhammer will relish a return to much faster conditions.
My selection is 13lb lower than for his last win at Ayr in May 2024, and I expect him to pounce late off a decent gallop likely to be set by Carolus Magnus.
Giselles Izzy ran better than the bare form suggests when a staying-on Hamilton sixth to Kranjcar on her latest start, but has never struck me as a Musselburgh mare (course form figures of 387) and Monhammer is readily preferred.
