Filip Krajinovic v David Goffin

Filip Krajinovic is performing at the peak of his powers but the Serb may still struggle to justify odds-on favouritism against super-consistent seventh seed David Goffin.

Krajinovic recorded emphatic wins over Dominic Thiem and Marton Fucsovics in Cincinnati last week before taking eventual runner-up Milos Raonic the distance in their quarter-final clash.

The 28-year-old has followed that up with straight-sets triumphs over Mikael Ymer and Marcos Giron in New York but Goffin is a different beast and quotes of 8-13 simply overrate the Serb’s chances.

Krajinovic enjoyed great success in exhibition events during the coronavirus-enforced layoff but he has yet to secure silverware on the ATP Tour and has never gone beyond the third round of a Grand Slam in 14 previous attempts.

Goffin, on the other hand, knows exactly where the winning line is and he has contested 13 ATP Tour finals throughout his career, winning top prize on four occasions.

The Belgian has reached the fourth round at the US Open in each of the last three years and he has achieved far more than Krajinovic has in reaching this far, with four-set wins over talented youngsters Reilly Opelka and Lloyd Harris reading particularly well.

Caroline Garcia was touted as a future world number one by Andy Murray when she arrived on the scene as a teenager in 2011 but she has struggled to meet those lofty expectations.

Garcia, who was as high as fourth in the world just two two years ago, currently finds herself in 50th in the rankings, but she is supremely talented on her day and capable of considerably better.

Confidence appears to have been the main issue for the fluent Frenchwoman but her straight-sets win over top seed Karolina Pliskova in the previous round should have done her the world of good and she is capable of delivering another upset against home hope Jennifer Brady.

The hard-hitting American claimed her maiden title in Lexington last month and she has dropped just eight games in overcoming Catherine Bellis and Anna Blinkova in New York this week.

However, the pair have shared their six previous encounters and their two most recent meetings in 2019 have to gone to a deciding set.

When both are operating at their best there would be little to separate these two - there are currently only nine places between them in the world - and with belief restored the value may lie with Garcia.
