The 93rd Academy Awards take place in the early hours of Monday morning and it has been a year like no other for the movie industry.
Since the last Oscars ceremony took place 14 months ago, movie production has been brought to a standstill and cinemas have been forced to close their doors due to the pandemic.

Another problem for UK film fans and punters is that a lot of this year’s nominated movies haven’t been easy to access on this side of the Atlantic. However, Best Picture nominations Mank and The Trial of the Chicago 7 have been available on Netflix, while Promising Young Woman (Sky) and Sound of Metal (Amazon Prime) have also recently been released.

Nomadland will not be available in the UK until after the awards are dished out but it is nevertheless the 1-4 favourite for the Best Picture accolade.

The market seems to have an accurate grip of that category, but there could be some value in the other sections and in particular the Best Actress bracket.

This is the most open betting heat of the major awards and British star Carey Mulligan is favourite to win after being nominated for her role in Promising Young Woman.

At the prices it could pay to take the Brit on with two-time winner Frances McDormand. The American has previously landed the gong for her performances in Fargo and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and she looks good value at 4-1 to land the hat-trick for her superb effort in Nomadland.

Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) and Andra Day (The United States Vs. Billie Holliday) are other contenders to consider in an intriguing category.

Chloe Zhao is a 1-14 shot to land the Best Director crown (Nomadland) while the late Chadwick Boseman is 1-8 to be posthumously awarded the Best Actor accolade for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
