Friday's quarter-final previews

Mark Selby was a 6-3 winner over Stephen Maguire in the first-round of the Masters, but that result flattered the Jester and he could be upset by quarter-final foe Barry Hawkins.

A 6-3 opening win reads well, but Selby's highest break in that contest was just 64 and it was Maguire making most of the running.

The Jester was able to pick up the pieces and win important moments against the Scot. However, that counter-attacking approach is likely to be successful only when you are afforded plenty of chances and there are reasons to think those opportunities may not be as forthcoming against Hawkins.

The Hawk was 2-1 down against Shaun Murphy in his first-round match, and while the Magician wasn't at his best, the Kent cueman rallied well to win the contest 6-2.

Hawkins knocked in breaks of 60, 67, 69 and 103 to win four consecutive frames against Murphy and that sort of break-building should see him give Selby plenty to think about.

A recent run to the semi-final of the UK Championship should have boosted the confidence of the Kent cueman and there's no doubt that Hawkins can still mix it with the best when on song.

Quotes of 15-8 look to be underplaying the chances of the Hawk swopping and landing a spot in a third Masters semi-final.

Judd Trump and Kyren Wilson will battle it out in the evening and the prices seem to have a good grip on what might happen. The Ace is 1-2 to reach the last-four, with Wilson rated a 7-4 shot.

There has been a building rivalry between these two potters and the Warrior has won 12 of the 25 matches the pair have contested. However, a fair few of those victories have come in short-format Championship League clashes and the Ace has certainly had the better of things in longer-distance battles.
