Ding Junhui has crashed out in the opening round of the Masters in six of the last seven years and he could be set for another early exit against debutant Jack Lisowski.

It has been a tough start to the season for Ding, who is operating way below the standard we become to expect from him and he has plenty to prove on his return to the Alexandra Palace.

Lisowski adopts an aggressive approach, is rarely one to turn down his shots, and a successful stint in the Championship League earlier this month showed his game was in rude health.

He won 12 of his 16 matches against elite opposition at the Ricoh Arena and he may be better prepared for the battle than Ding, who hasn’t played a competitive match since December’s German Masters qualifier.

Luca Brecel, who dumped out defending champion Mark Allen in his opener, showed how sharp he was following a sequence of wins in the Championship League and Lisowski could do likewise.
