Quarter-final previews
Anthony McGill v Stuart Bingham 10am
Stuart Bingham leads Anthony McGill 3-2 on the head-to-heads going into their most important meeting in the Betfred World Championship quarter-finals, but there's a big opportunity for the Scot to draw level in their personal series and progress to the last four at the Crucible.
Both players may never have played better than they are now – and that takes into account the superb play Bingham produced to be crowned world champion in 2015.
Bingham is making tons with ease and that's obviously a positive and a boost for his chances against any opponent.
However, this year's McGill model is a totally different specimen from the one who nearly made the Crucible title match last year. Last August the Glaswegian could not make a ton until his semi-final clash with Kyren Wilson.
This time he's playing considerably better, and when you take into account his rock-solid temperament and the boost he will have got from upsetting Ronnie O'Sullivan 13-12 in the last 16, then Bingham, and anyone else McGill might meet further down the line in the tournament, may find himself up against a mighty force.
Bingham has already ousted Ding Junhui 10-9 and Jamie Jones 13-6, but while both victims were playing okay and fairly well, neither was at their brilliant best.
McGill, who pulled away from the useful Ricky Walden to win 10-5 in round one, then stepped up on that display be taking the game to O'Sullivan. The Rocket came back from 10-6 down to lead 11-10 and 12-11, but McGill kept his concentration to post telling breaks of 136 and 85 to edge through.
Improving McGill, who has enjoyed a rest since dumping the Rocket, can be backed to win the match.
Neil Robertson v Kyren Wilson 10am
Neil Robertson is a warm favourite to progress to the semi-finals by defeating Kyren Wilson, but their personal series suggests there is hope for the outsider.
It's 3-3 in previous meetings but whereas Robertson's triumphs were all close affairs, Wilson landed telling 5-0 and 6-2 wins in their two latest clashes.
Robertson, a 10-3 victory over Liang Wenbo in round one, took his time at the table more in his 13-9 victory over Jack Lisowski. Jackpot is an improving force on the baize, so perhaps the Australian felt he needed a more measured performance against the Gloucestershire potter.
Will Robbo do likewise against last year's Crucible runner-up Wilson, whose consistency marks him out as a genuine title contender as well as the title market leaders Judd Trump, Robertson and Mark Selby?
He could do but Wilson is a more experienced performer than Lisowski and may afford more of a challenge to the Melbourne potter. The Warrior can also be a top-notch scorer too, so the Kettering potter should be confident he has enough tools to take the game to the UK Championship hero.
Wilson, who has twice had to dig deep already in the tournament to see off Gary Wilson 10-8 and Barry Hawkins 13-10, can be considered with a handicap start of 3.5 frames.
But he would need to reach double figures in that option and the way oddsmakers structure their markets means that punters get an extra frame on their side by going down the total frames route, so over 21.5 would seem a slightly better choice.
Given the scoring power of the pair, punters can also consider a bet on a high-quality match ensuing. The total centuries line in this best-of-25-frames clash is 5.5, and oddsmakers believe five tons are likelier to be compiled than six.
