France are being touted as one of the main contenders for glory at Russia 2018 and they can send out a statement by beating world champions Germany in Cologne.

Qualification was a cakewalk for the Germans, who were the only team to maintain a 100 per cent record.

But they have been less convincing in friendlies – drawing three of the last four – and face a tough task against France, who have plenty of individual quality.

Germany head coach Joachim Low has warned his players to expect a tougher game than they experienced in the 0-0 draw with England on Friday and may be proved right.

Low is expected to recall key midfielders Toni Kroos and Sami Khedira to the starting line-up but it might not be enough.

France may be outmatched in midfield but they are strong at the back and can do plenty of damage on the counter-attack with the pace of Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe.

They defeated Germany 2-0 with an expert counter-attacking performance in the semi-finals at Euro 2016 and could do something similar against a Germany side missing key players Manuel Neuer and Thomas Muller.
