Match preview

Hungary will be cursing their ill fortune on the eve of Euro 2020 - not only have they been saddled with a group including France, Germany and Portugal but they also go into battle without their best player, Leipzig's Dominik Szoboszlai.

Reaching the knockout stage as they did four years ago looks a daunting task among such company, but they should be able to head into the tournament having beaten Ireland in Budapest on Tuesday.

Stephen Kenny's side ended a winless run of 12 matches with a 4-1 success over Andorra but they have struggled with the disappointment of missing out on a finals spot following a penalty shootout defeat to Slovakia.

World Cup qualifying defeats to Serbia and Luxembourg have followed and while Hungary have not tackled any of the giants of European football in their ten-match unbeaten run, they have performed well against some nations who may be considered counterparts in the second tier.

They have beaten Iceland and Turkey at home, won in Serbia and earned a 3-3 draw on their own patch against a Poland team considered by many as dark horses for this summer's footballing extravaganza.

Ireland have turned to Troy Parrott in an attempt to solve their goalscoring problems and the Tottenham striker scored twice in the win over Andorra, but he could be hard pressed to have a big influence in finding a route past Leipzig custodian Peter Gulacsi.

The Boys in Green appear to be in a transitional phase while Hungary should put in a dominant display before their intimidating set of group matches.

Key stat

Hungary are unbeaten in their last ten matches
