Sung Kang grabbed the AT&T Byron Nelson by the scruff of the neck on Friday when he equalled the course record at Trinity Forest with a 61 that included ten birdies.

That earned him a four-shot lead at the halfway stage as he had few problems coping with the cool conditions in Dallas as the 31-year-old South Korean goes in search of his first PGA Tour.

Players will play in threeballs in the third round, starting from both the first and tenth tees in the hope of staying on schedule with heavy rain anticipated in Texas.

Playing in his home state inspired three-time Major winner Jordan Spieth to one of his better performances.

Spieth, who has yet to post a top-20 finish this season, is nine shots off the pace but made almost 4.5 shots on the field on the greens in his second-round 67.

He still looks on the short side at 11-10 to get the better of Matt Jones and Jonas Blixt in his third round threeball, but Saturday's best bet looks to be to get with another local player, 22-year-old Scottie Scheffler, to continue his notable recent progress.

He graduated from the University of Texas last summer but is making waves on the secondary Web.com tour, claiming top-ten finishes in each of his last four tournaments at that level, including two runner-up spots.

Scheffler also displayed his ability to step up in class when he claimed 20th spot in the recent Valero Texas Open and he can maintain his progress by getting the better of Sweden's Henrik Stenson and fellow American Zack Suchar.

Stenson lost shots on the field on the greens on Friday and has not had a great season, having posted just one top-20 finish in a strokeplay tournament in 2019.

The former Open champion could be vulnerable and there is decent chance that Suchar will get giddy as he starts the day joint-tenth on the leaderboard.

Suchar, who is ranked 954th in the world, was 50th at the Wells Fargo Championship last week and fourth at the Dormie Network Classic on the Web.com the week before.

However, he missed 19 months of action with an unspecified injury between 2017 and 2018 and there have been few signs of progress since he made his comeback.
