Match preview

Nearly four months after their last Sky Bet League One fixtures, Wycombe and Fleetwood blew away the cobwebs with a scintillating opening six minutes of their playoff semi-final first leg but it was clear to see which side was fitter and hungrier as the game progressed.

Wycombe built on a frenetic opening spell to lead 3-1 at half-time before adding a fourth after the break to all but end Fleetwood's hopes of promotion.

Wanderers were among the greatest beneficiaries of the points-per-game system deciding the final standings with Gareth Ainsworth's men flying up from eighth to third in the standings, but they made the most of the opportunity and it's difficult to see them spurning it in their home leg.

Despite seeing only 36 per cent possession in the first leg, they won the shot count 14-3 and their superiority should be enhanced in the second leg with Fleetwood missing key players Paddy Madden and Lewie Coyle through suspension.

Wycombe may not have a crowd to give them an added boost but they have shown they can be devastating on the Adams Park surface, with 13 of their 17 league wins this term coming on home soil.

Fleetwood boss Joey Barton insists his side will come back stronger and win the second leg but they looked too erratic in defence - also giving away a first-half penalty which Wycombe missed - and they have a sub-par record against top opposition this season.

Against the top six teams in the League One standings, Town have managed only three wins and they also fell to defeats against strong Doncaster, Ipswich and Burton sides, so are worth opposing as Wycombe edge closer to their first season in England's second tier.

Key stat

Wycombe have lost only two of their 18 home league games this season.
