Match preview

Just goal difference separates Preston and Queens Park Rangers in the Championship, but the pair appear to be heading in different directions.

Preston’s 4-0 crushing at Cardiff on Saturday was their fourth Championship defeat in five while QPR have been transformed by the return of experienced striker Charlie Austin, winning six of their seven league matches since his arrival.

Mark Warburton’s visitors have claimed some big scalps along the way, too, with their purple patch featuring consecutive victories over Watford, Blackburn, Brentford and Bournemouth.

Preston were forced to cash in on some of their most influential assets in January, when Ben Davies, Ben Pearson and Darnell Fisher all departed Deepdale, while an injury to steely centre-back Patrick Bauer has been another big blow.

With attacking players Tom Barkhuizen, Daniel Johnson and Scott Sinclair also struggling to hit top form, Preston, who have scored one goal in four home games, look extremely vulnerable.

Key stat

QPR are unbeaten in six Championship away games, winning each of their last three.
