Match preview
Manchester United must be considered serious title contenders after their stunning move to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo and their weekend could get even better with a victory over Wolves at Molineux.
Ronaldo's move back to Manchester is sure to excite the United supporters, who thoroughly enjoyed the rampant 5-1 success over Leeds on the opening weekend of the season.
Dropped points at Old Trafford were the main reason for failing to keep pace with Manchester City last term but the performance against Leeds was a throwback to years gone by as United responded positively to the demands of a home crowd.
United should improve on last season's home points tally (31), but must be mindful of maintaining the high standards they have set on the road.
The Red Devils have not lost in 27 Premier League away games and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is unlikely to panic despite the shortcomings of the performance at Southampton, where Anthony Martial struggled as the lone striker and Nemanja Matic lacked energy in midfield.
Solskjaer has options to switch things around with Mason Greenwood in contention to revert to the centre-forward duties he performed so impressively against Leeds.
Raphael Varane could feature for the first time and United should have enough quality to prevail.
Wolves are developing an unwanted tag as unlucky losers after 1-0 reverses at Leicester and at home to Tottenham.
They played some decent football in both matches – winning the shot count 17 to nine against Leicester and 25 to eight against Spurs – but were found wanting in key areas.
Adama Traore was a constant threat to Tottenham with his power and pace but there are question marks over his end product – he delivered just two goals and two assists in the Premier League last term – and he fluffed his lines at the decisive moment when one-on-one with Hugo Lloris.
While Traore is flattering to deceive, talisman Raul Jimenez is still finding his feet after battling back from a head injury.
Jimenez has forged a reputation as a penalty-box predator but the Mexican has to recover mentally as well as physically and looks short of his best.
Wolves manager Bruno Lage could do with a few attacking alternatives but 19-year-old record signing Fabio Silva is still struggling to live up to his £35m price tag and Daniel Podence and Pedro Neto are among the injured contingent.
Lage's team are have been attractive to watch but the lack of goals and points are an obvious concern which may persist into the international break.
