Match previews

Schalke are in free fall in the Bundesliga and a Werder Bremen side in the thick of a relegation battle should sniff blood when they travel to the Veltins-Arena.

Defeat to Borussia Dortmund, even if it were a 4-0 hammering, was probably expected by the Schalke faithful but consequent losses to mediocre Augsburg (3-0) and Fortuna Dusseldorf (2-1) outfits will have raised alarm bells.

Schalke had taken the lead against Dusseldorf but never looked in control of the game, seeing only 38 per cent of the ball, and defeat at the Esprit Arena means they are winless in their last ten matches.

David Wagner's men have been hit hard by the simultaneous absences of primary creative outlets Amine Harit and Suat Serdar, who will both miss the game with Bremen along with forward Benito Raman, who is nursing a thigh injury.

That leaves them with Guido Burgstaller, Rabbi Matondo and Ahmed Kutucu as Schalke's best alternative options in the final third and the trio only have four goals between them this season.

That will do no favours for a Schalke side who have failed to score in more games (11) than any other Bundesliga team this term and there could scarcely be a better time for Werder Bremen to be playing them.

The visitors have been better on the road than at home this term, with four of their five league wins coming away from the Weserstadion, and they have looked more organised since the restart.

Kevin Vogt should come back into the side to reinforce a rearguard who have kept successive clean sheets against European hopefuls Borussia Monchengladbach and Freiburg.

Should Bremen opt for a conservative, counter-attacking approach, they have pace in the final third in star man Milot Rashica while USA striker Josh Sargent is starting to show some promise.

There is minimal value in backing Bremen in the double-chance market and, given Schalke's dire form, an outright win could be the way to go.

Schalke made Augsburg look like a side vying for European football in their 3-0 defeat last weekend but that was only the Bavarian side's second win in ten Bundesliga matches and they could struggle away to Hertha Berlin.

January signing Matheus Cunha and new manager Bruno Labbadia have been a match made in heaven for Hertha, who are unbeaten in their last five encounters.

They have destroyed Hoffenheim 3-0 and Union Berlin 4-0 since the restart and their 2-2 draw away to Leipzig last time out, albeit against ten men for the last half hour, showed recent results have been no fluke.

Max Mittelstadt is expected to replace Marvin Plattenhardt for this clash but beyond that it could be the same team who has captivated the new Bundesliga audience and they look a great price to come out on top against Augsburg, who could not breach basement boys Paderborn last time out.

Among the standout results of the midweek fixtures was Wolfsburg's 4-1 dismantling of a highflying Bayer Leverkusen side on the hunt for Champions League football.

Oliver Glasner's men managed eight shots on target in the match to tighten their grasp on sixth spot and make amends for their defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

Next up for Wolfsburg is Eintracht Frankfurt, who have been leaking goals since the restart, having conceded 11 goals in their last three games, and have the worst away record in the division.

Frankfurt have won only twice on the road this campaign and Wolfsburg, who have Wout Weghorst in the lineup again and Renato Steffen in red-hot form, should take maximum points.
