The Hundred preview

Southern Brave are among the outright favourites for the inaugural edition of the Hundred and begin their campaign in Nottingham against Trent Rockets this weekend.

The depth in Mahela Jayawardene's squad is perhaps their greatest strength but they will also be looking to batsman James Vince to impress.

Hampshire willow-wielder Vince is fresh from scoring his maiden international century for England at the end of their recent ODI series with Pakistan, firing 102 from 95 deliveries.

And he was also electrifying with the bat in the Big Bash League at the start of the year, helping Sydney Sixers secure the 2020-21 crown with 537 runs in 16 innings - the second-highest total in the division.

The 30-year-old has shown how dangerous he can be in the shortest format and looks a decent selection to top-score for his side in their first match in The Hundred.

Northern Superchargers will be without key man Ben Stokes in August with the England man set to be on Test duty but they can at least get a couple of games out of the Hero of Headingley beforehand.

And they look a good bet to see off Welsh Fire in their opener at the Leeds venue.

The Glamorgan outfit have been hit by an injury to Ollie Pope and, on paper at least, their overseas contingent of Qais Ahmed, Glenn Phillips and Jimmy Neesham does not look strong enough.

As for the Superchargers, they have plenty of attacking firepower even beyond Stokes with skipper Faf du Plessis and Chris Lynn dangerous operators at the crease.

Adil Rashid and David Willey, meanwhile, are excellent homegrown options and the Yorkshire outfit look a great bet to win this at a shade of odds-on.

In the contest between Northern Superchargers Women and Welsh Fire Women, backing a top runscorer could be the way to go.

While the Superchargers can boast exciting youngsters such as Laura Woolvardt and Jemimah Rodrigues, veteran Lauren Winfield-Hill could lead the attack.

She has a strike rate of 111 in Twenty20 internationals and is the kind of player who likes to start on the front foot.

Winfield-Hill fired 16, 42 and 36 for England Women in the recent ODI series with India Women and could thrive in this competition.
