Anthony Joshua vs Jake Paul – fight preview and prediction

The final mega fight of 2025 sees Britain's two-time heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua return to the ring after over a year away.

Joshua had been set to make his comeback next year, with a long-awaited showdown with long-time rival Tyson Fury in the offing, but he’s been tempted back ahead of schedule by boxing's disruptor-in-chief Jake Paul.

A rumoured payday of around £70 million may have had something to do with AJ’s decision to take on the challenge. But for Paul’s part, he has regularly called out Joshua and has, outwardly at least, demonstrated an unwavering belief that he can pull off a huge upset – but those thoughts are surely not grounded in reality.

On paper the fight looks like a huge mismatch. Joshua has contested 13 world title fights in a career that has seen him reach the top of the heavyweight ranks, while Paul, who found fame on YouTube, has put together a 12-1 record largely comprised of fellow social media personalities, MMA specialists and over-the-hill boxers.

Paul, who made his professional ring debut in 2020, has largely fought at cruiserweight but will step up to heavyweight to fight Joshua in Miami.

His forgettable win over an almost 60-year-old Mike Tyson last year was technically contested in the blue riband division, but both fighters wore 14oz gloves instead of the standard 10oz and the fight took place over eight two-minute rounds.

Tonight's Anthony Joshua vs Jake Paul fight is another eight-rounder but the fighters will wear 10oz gloves and each round will last three minutes.

Joshua has all the physical advantages in his favour. He has greater size, reach and power, and he is also far more experienced and a superior technician than Paul.

The American potentially has speed on his side and he’s been channelling Muhammad Ali in the build-up to the fight, claiming he will “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee” to engineer a monumental upset.

That’s fine in theory, but in practice Paul will require an incredible level of skill, discipline and knowledge to execute his plan. He hasn't shown he possesses such qualities in his previous fights and it's hard to seem him troubling Joshua.

The Brit's promoter, Eddie Hearn, wrote on the BBC earlier this week that the strategy is to "knock Jake out ASAP" and AJ should hold up his end of the bargain.

Joshua is one of the most devastating finishers in the modern heavyweight era and he may only need one opportunity in Miami.

For all Paul’s talk about speed and skill, he has limited fundamentals, lacks basic defensive skills and his footwork is predictable. That's even before you consider that he has simply never faced anyone with anywhere near Joshua's power.

The last time Joshua fought a non-boxer he worked out Francis Ngannou early and stopped the UFC great inside two rounds. If Joshua takes this fight seriously, rather than as a tune-up bout for a potential fight against Fury in 2026, he should be able to do a similar job on Paul.

There is clearly little value in backing Joshua at 1-10 to win the fight but the 8-5 that he wraps things up before the second bell is worth taking a chance on.

Big-fight Bet Builder tips: Gareth Freeman has a 13-2 treble for the Miami showdown

Dubois to make her point on Miami undercard

The undercard in Miami is a tough hunting ground for punters with a host of heavy favourites, but there are a few options to consider before the main event.

Caroline Dubois, the younger sister of Joshua’s last opponent Daniel, makes her debut under Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions banner against Camilla Panatta in one of the earlier bouts.

Dubois, who is defending her WBC lightweight title, is 1-33 to beat the Italian but could be a bet to win on points as Panatta has never been stopped and all of Dubois’ wins since she stepped up to world level have gone the distance.

Anderson Silva is an 8-15 chance to beat fellow veteran Tyron Woodley in a battle of two UFC legends.

Silva has more experience in the ring and was a capable striker during his days in the UFC. He should be able to get the better of Woodley, who is 0-2 in the squared circle with both of his defeats coming against Paul.

The standout bet on the undercard comes in the penultimate fight as Alycia Baumgardner defends her super featherweight titles against Canadian challenger Leila Beaudoin.

Baumgardner is one of the best active pound-for-pound fighters around and should have far too much for Beaudoin.

The American champ's last five wins have all come via unanimous decisions and she is 8-15 to receive the judges' favour again in Florida.
